The visa is issued by the Thai Embassy in Laos for the first three months, with the possibility of three additional 90-day extensions. In order for the school to process the extension documents within the country (no need to leave the country), you must register at your place of residence upon returning from Laos. Extensions cost 5,000 baht per 90-day period, for a total of one year. Overall, this is an excellent option for those planning to live in Thailand for at least a year.
